Aman Gupta, one of the popular judges of the reality show Shark Tank India, reacted to Union Minister Piyush Goyal's appeal to Indian start-ups to think bigger and target value-driven businesses.
Gupta, Co-Founder of the consumer electronics brand boAt, took to social media to express his support for the Minister’s speech at the ‘Start-up Mahakumbh’ event, where Goyal urged entrepreneurs to move beyond niche ideas like vegan ice creams and set their sights on more ambitious goals.
The controversy that broke out on India's start-up ecosystem was initiated by Goyal's speech, in which he called for more meaningful innovation. In a scathing comment, Goyal quoted Gupta, telling him to "change your approach in the Shark Tank".
Gupta interpreted Goyal's remarks, though, as non-critical nudges for the budding start-up culture. Replyng on X (previously Twitter), Gupta indicated that what the Minister intended to do was provoke founders into taking their dream bigger, as opposed to demoting their ongoing work.
"The Union Minister is not against us. He trusts us", Gupta wrote. His message is straightforward: India has traveled far but to emerge as a global leader, we need to reach for higher things. He went on to say that India, the third-largest start-up hub globally and the fastest-growing major economy already, had the capacity to make a global difference if the emphasis was put on high-tech areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), deep tech, and sustainable innovation.
Gupta added that India needs to invest in such spaces as climate, mobility, infrastructure, and LLMs, making innovation stacks competitive globally. He highlighted the necessity of scientific risk-taking, patient capital, and increased co-operation between founders and policymakers to create a long-term national vision.
The strong contrast between light-hearted ventures such as vegan ice cream and the lofty technology goals set forth by Goyal has created strong debate. However, Gupta views this as a chance for start-ups to grow, stating that while India's present successes in the start-up arena are strong, that which is possible for the future is much greater.
"We've done something amazing. But what we can do… is much better", he stated, reaffirming his passion to drive further and more consequential endeavors.
While India continues to push forward its entrepreneurial landscape, Gupta's call mirrors the emerging cry for increased innovation that might see the country as a top leader in tech and business in the world.
